Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is making sure that the fundamentals of your story sitting on a solid foundation. Much like a house, we want to be sure that the walls stand up when you decorate them with words, that the roof won’t collapse inwards when your characters walk over them. It’s about capturing the bigger picture, understanding the broader elements, and strengthening the skeleton that your story will sit on.

Also known as a manuscript assessment or structural edit, there are several elements that your editor will feedback to you on, including:

  • The overall structure, coherence and content

  • Core strengths and weaknesses

  • Narrative flow

Line Editing

Usually, line editing and copy editing are two separate services. However, at EditAble, we combine the two together for no extra cost and focus on preparing your manuscript for publication. This means that the editor will check your work for:

  • Consistency of language

  • How the narrative is communicated to the reader

  • Repeated phrases or clunkiness of sentences

  • POV and tense switches

  • Inconsistencies in plot, character reactions, style or terminology.

  • Where applicable, if a magic system is logical and structured correctly

Proofreading

Ah yes, the finale of editing! Your editor will review your final draft, going through it line by line with a fine-tooth comb. It’s about that extra polish before your manuscript is whisked away, ready for publication.

Your editor will be looking for:

  • Typos/mispellings

  • Formatting inconsistencies

  • Punctuation mishaps

  • Consistency of capitalisation and hyphenation
